Taylor Swift and the Super Bowl: The Ultimate Pop Culture Collision

All Eyes on Taylor Swift as She Steals the Super Bowl Spotlight

Swifties, conspiracy theorists, and sports fans alike will be watching the Super Bowl this year, eagerly anticipating what Taylor Swift might do—even if she does nothing at all.

Over the past two weeks, Taylor Swift has made headlines dozens of times, but only one or two instances were actually due to her actions. Her music was removed from TikTok because of a disagreement between Universal Music Group and the app itself. Her songs were boosted illegally by pirates. Explicit deepfakes of Swift? Blame 4chan. Conspiracy theories about Swift being a psyop? Those come from right-wing commentators. Swift did win Grammys and announce a new album, The Tortured Poets Department, which she broke the news about herself. Taylor Swift is the attention economy’s Tasmanian devil, and all anyone can do is try to watch without getting dizzy.

On Sunday, that Tasmanian devil is probably going to Super Bowl LVIII. The “probably” is also newsworthy. Two weeks ago, after the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Baltimore Ravens and secured their place in the Big Game, fans immediately checked Swift’s Eras Tour schedule—only to find she’ll be in Tokyo the night before her boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, hits the turf. After much fretting and an assist from The West Wing, fans reassured themselves that she could make it. Further assuaging fears, the Japanese Embassy in Washington, DC, posted on X that “despite the 12-hour flight and 17-hour time difference, the Embassy can confidently Speak Now to say that if she departs Tokyo in the evening after her concert, she should comfortably arrive in Las Vegas before the Super Bowl.” This, too, made news.

Swift’s mere presence at Chiefs games has brought huge viewership spikes to NFL broadcasts this season. Last year’s Super Bowl, which featured an iconic performance by Rihanna, was viewed by a colossal 115 million people, according to Nielsen. Swift’s attendance—or even the idea that she might attend—at LVIII could boost viewership even higher. Although the game is already the US’s most-watched sporting event of the year, having Swift involved significantly impacts the event’s cultural cachet.

“The Super Bowl is already such a major US pop culture event. It’s already a mix of people who like the NFL, which is a big audience, and then you’ve got the people who are more interested in the ads than the game,” says Charles R. Taylor, a marketing professor at Villanova University. “Now you add this Taylor Swift Effect on top of that, and it’s going to be record-breaking.”

Speaking of mileage, there’s one more bit of Swift news this week: Her attorneys are, according to The Washington Post, seeking to stop a Florida college student from posting the singer’s jet traffic on social media—bringing to mind another conspiracy theory.

Undeniably, Swift isn’t the first famous face to bring attention to a sporting event. Spotting celebs in the stands at the US Open is a sport unto itself. So is looking for Spike Lee or Jack Nicholson at Knicks and Lakers games, respectively. None of those celebrities, though, are believed to be part of a deep-state psyop to alter the course of the 2024 US election. No one is watching TV expecting Tom Hiddleston to walk out onto the court after an Open women’s final and claim Arthur Ashe Stadium for the British.

On Sunday, many people will be keeping an eye on the Super Bowl—or social media’s reaction to the Super Bowl—waiting for an event of this caliber. It’s the pop culture uncanny valley come to life. In all likelihood, Swift will watch a football game, wearing red, and join Kelce on the field after the game should the Chiefs win. Until the end, though, the world will be watching, briefly distracted by Usher’s halftime show and $7 million 30-second spots, to see if the psyop reveals itself. And to see if Swift makes news again—whether she tries to or not.
